Curriculum Overview

  • Wonders Reading Program (Grades K–6)

Our school is proud to implement the Wonders Reading Program from McGraw Hill for students in Kindergarten through Grade 6. Wonders is a comprehensive, research-based literacy curriculum designed to meet the diverse needs of all learners and foster a love of reading from an early age.

Built on the science of reading, the program combines whole-group, small-group, and individual instruction to support students in building strong foundational skills, reading fluency, comprehension, vocabulary, and writing. Wonders provides engaging, high-quality texts across a wide range of genres, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and multicultural literature, ensuring students are exposed to rich and diverse content.

Key features of the program include:

  • Phonics and Word Study aligned with foundational reading research

  • Close Reading strategies to promote critical thinking and comprehension

  • By using Wonders, our goal is to empower every student to become a confident, skilled reader and writer, prepared for success in school and beyond.

  • Integrated Writing Instruction that supports students in responding to texts and developing their voice

  • Support for English Learners (ELs) with scaffolds and targeted instruction

  • Digital and Print Resources to support differentiated learning at school and at home

  • Bridgeport Public Schools uses a computerized reading program called Lexia that provides students with the opportunity to practice basic reading skills independently. The program is adaptive and helps students develop skills in the five areas of reading instruction: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. Lexia® PowerUp Literacy® is an adaptive program used by students in grades 6 to focus on critical thinking skills, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.

To access Lexia programs at home, students will log in to their Clever Dashboard the same way they log in at school. They will have access to one of the following versions of Lexia depending on their grade level: Lexia® Core5® Reading or Lexia® PowerUp Literacy®.

  • In Grades 7 and 8 ELA, students will be using a new online program called Reading Plus. This program measures your student's individual vocabulary and reading comprehension level, and then assigns different lessons to strengthen these skills. Students are also taking three, three-part assessments at the beginning, middle, and end of the year to measure their growth. The program will be used during ELA, Flex, and at home.
